ABOUT US
Welcome to Superior Grown!
Northeast MN and Northwest WI are blessed with a rich agricultural heritage and many unique, sustainable farms. Across the Lake Superior region, free-range chickens, diversified vegetables, pick-you-own berries, maple syrup operations, grass-fed beef, artisan cheeses, smoked Lake Superior fish and other farm enterprises dot the rural landscape. Superior Grown recognizes this bounty and is working to reconnect people with the region’s dedicated farmers. By connecting regional consumers, businesses and farmers, Superior Grown promotes a regional food system that nurtures vibrant communities, provides quality, nutritious food to citizens and strengthens local economies.
Superior Grown is a trademarked name, logo and directory used to create a unique identity for regional farmers and for business that support local agriculture. Superior Grown represents a 16-county region defined by various environmental, climatic and philosophical factors surrounding the Lake Superior Basin. Social, environmental and economic sustainability is at the heart of Superior Grown.
The project was initiated in 2003 with a unique partnership between the Northeast MN Sustainable Development Partnership (NMSDP), the Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association (SFA), the Institute for a Sustainable Future, Lake Superior Slow Food Convivium, and a variety of regional businesses, farmers and citizens. Thank you to MNSDP for the generous funding to help actualize Superior Grown!
TODAY, Superior Grown, is maintained through a partnership between the Silver Creek Institute, a non-profit providing sustainable solutions for everyday living in the fields of agriculture, clean energy and community development, and the Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association, a farmer-driven organization that works to build sustainable farming systems in the Lake Superior region.
